The Department of Microbiology was established in 1997 with two UG courses: Microbiology, Botany and Chemistry (MBC), Microbiology, Zoology and Chemistry (MZC). In 2003, Microbiology, Biotechnology, Chemistry (Bt.M.C) combination was also offered to the students. Currently the department offers the above courses to 260 students.

Objectives:

To gear graduates with holistic knowledge, creative power, and research abilities to develop various techniques for the profession and further improve their employability in future. Strengthen students with patience, concentration, enquiring mind, problem- solving skills, compile reports for paper presentations and updated industrial skills. Elementary knowledge in clinical, immunological, biochemical techniques for the graduates shall help them to pursue careers for higher studies, entrepreneurial abilities.

Facilities:

The Department has two labs with sophisticated equipments like Laminar air flow, Binocular microscope, Compound Microscopes, Magnetic stirrer with hot plate, Cyclomixer, Incubators, Hot air oven, Spectrophotometer, colorimeters,Autoclave, Digital balance, Monopan balance, colony counter, electrophoretic apparatus, PH meter, centrifuge, Micropipettes. The Departmental library has 218 books.

  • Ms. Nahida Fatima won the Best paper presentation award at the National seminar on “Advances in Microbiological perspectives for sustainable future” organized by Chaitanya(Deemed to be) University, Hanamkonda, Telangana on 15 & 16 February 2023
  • Dr. Kusuma Dorcas has authored eleven and a half chapters in a text book for B.Sc III Year, Botany, Generic Elective-”Industrial Microbiology” Semester V published by Telugu Akademi in January 2022

  • The Department of Microbiology has organized a National Webinar on “Challenges to Combat Covid-19” on 30th May, 2020.The speaker for the session was Dr.Ruchi Jain Dey, Assistant Professor, BITS Pilani, Hyderabad. The objective of the webinar was current and the possible future treatment options for covid-19 and their success rate, Personal and institutional prevention methods post lockdown. 231 participants were involved among which 72% were students,26% were faculty and 2% were research scholar belonging to states of Telangana, Andhra Pradesh, Karnataka, Maharashtra,Kerala,Gujarat,M.P, Punjab, U.P. and Chandigarh.

Final year (MBC) have demonstrated an experiment and a skit on Blood Groups and Blood compatibility for Class 9 at Zilla Parishad Girls High school, Malkajgiri on 28.07.2017.They also educated the girls about Erythroblastosis fetalis,a fatal blood disorder in infants (Rh incompatibility disease).
